Finding Maa Durga in the Heart of Kumartuli – A Tale of Faith and Determination

The journey to bring Maa Durga to Cleveland began with a dream—a dream to recreate the grandeur and divinity of Durga Puja thousands of miles away from home. But dreams, as we know, demand more than just imagination; they require determination, planning, and an unshakable spirit. And so, the quest for the perfect idol began—a task that would test our resolve, creativity, and devotion.

The most sacred and challenging task was to find the perfect embodiment of the goddess—a form that would capture her grace, strength, and beauty. It wasn’t just about choosing an idol; it was about selecting a guardian deity who would bless our homes and hearts for years to come. Size, material, style—every detail mattered. Should it be traditional clay with chala, or should we go for the modern elegance of fiberglass? Should it be shipped by sea for safety or flown by air for urgency? Each decision carried weight, and every step required collective thought and immense faith.

Fortunately, our founding members rose to the occasion with unwavering dedication. Amiya, Ananya, and Seema, along with a close friend, took it upon themselves to venture into the legendary lanes of Kumartuli, Kolkata’s century-old artist quarter, where Maa Durga is brought to life by the hands of master sculptors. They walked through narrow alleys brimming with idols in various stages of creation—some adorned with gold, others still shaping up from clay, but all radiating divinity.

After visiting several studios, their journey led them to one name that stood above the rest—Mintu Pal, a renowned sculptor celebrated for creating the iconic 88-feet-high Durga idol for Deshapriya Park in 2015. Mintu Pal wasn’t just a name; he was a symbol of perfection, and his work reflected both tradition and innovation.

With guidance from our ground team and countless deliberations, the vision of our Durga idol began to take shape. A model was crafted—a best-of-breed design blending the ethereal beauty of Maa’s motherly face with the modern grandeur of a fiberglass chala, adding elegance and durability. The moment felt surreal, as though Maa Durga herself had chosen us to bring her to this new home across the oceans.

No time was wasted; the order was placed at lightning speed, matching the energy and passion with which NEOBA was founded. And thus, the 10-feet-tall idol of Maa Durga began to take shape—an embodiment of strength, grace, and divinity—ready to embark on her first journey to Cleveland, blessing us with her presence and uniting a community under her watchful gaze.

This story isn’t just about bringing an idol home; it’s about faith in action, the spirit of community, and the triumph of tradition. As Maa Durga’s creation continues, so does the heartbeat of NEOBA, echoing with excitement and anticipation for the grandest celebration yet.
